ESPA Grabs California by Storm

Oceanside, CA: Hydranautics, the world’s leading producer of reverse osmosis membranes uses advanced membrane technology to create the ESPA, Energy Saving Polyamide product line. These RO elements, widely acclaimed for their effectiveness among a wide variety of water treatment applications, work at a remarkably low operating pressure to save more energy than any other membrane type. Now, while the winds of research & development budgets are blowing, Hydranautics’ persevering commitment to R&D is forging a technology revolution in the world of water treatment.

Customized membrane elements offer precise treatment for unique water applications. In meeting the diversified needs of the industry, Hydranautics is offering three different types of ESPA membrane:

  • The ESPA1 provides OEMs and end-users with 99.0% minimum rejection and a nominal flow rate of 12,000gpd.
  • The ESPA2 element represents the newest generation of low-pressure membranes, with 99.6% average rejection and a nominal flow rate of 9,000gpd, for significantly lower salt passage than any competitor in the marketplace.
  • For the highest productivity available from any brackish RO element, Hydranautics offers the ESPA3 element, with a nominal flow rate of 14,000gpd and 98% minimum rejection.

Satisfied customers in California from the municipal and industrial markets produce more than 30MGD of water utilizing the ESPA membrane. These projects include West Basin, a 2.5MGD plant where cellulose acetate membrane elements were replaced with the ESPA2 yielding favorable results. The system, with brand new CAB elements, operated at 34 Mg/L TDS, at 230psi, unlike the operating pressure and water quality upon replacement by ESPA2 elements… 18 Mg/L TDS @ 146psi. Systems using ESPA2 membrane elements at the Corona Desalter will produce 5 MGD of potable water, and a two-pass system at the Chevron plant in El Segundo offers 4.6 MGD and 3.9 MGD respectively from high-pressure boiler feed water with excellent productivity and reduced power costs. The ESPA was the only membrane that could guarantee the required permeate quality in this critical application.
